5. Taking your temperature, general information

  • Taking the basal body temperature reliably, every day, is one of the key elements of our system. The more regularly that you take your temperature, particularly at the beginning, the faster the device gets to know your personal cycle.
  • The basal body temperature is the temperature of the body just after waking up and before getting out of bed or becoming active in any way.
  • Place the thermometer under the tongue, right at the back, either to the left or the right of the frenulum with the mouth closed.
^ Top

5.1 Temperature reading time limit

  • You can only take a temperature reading once a day and within the temperature reading time limit.
  • The alarm must be activated before the first temperature reading.
  • Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp controls the temperature reading time limit. It comprises 6 hours, beginning and ending three hours before and after the alarm time, or +/-3 hours in relationship to the previous temperature reading time if this differs from the alarm time.
  • If there is no temperature reading for one day, the time limit is left open.
  • The thermometer symbol remains illuminated throughout the temperature reading time limit
  • Normally the alarm time and the temperature reading time are both the same. We recommend that you allow Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp to wake you up.
  • If you wake up within the temperature reading time limit, e.g. to look after your child, take your temperature.
  • If you get up late and the time limit is over, there is no reading for that day.
^ Top

5.2. Taking your temperature Proceeding from the time display

  • The thermometer symbol is illuminated. It is ready for a temperature reading.
  • Now place the thermometer under your tongue, right at the back, either to the left or to the right of the frenulum.
  • To take your temperature, press any button. The thermometer symbol flashes.
  • The display shows temperature readings of 35.20 to 37.59 degrees. When, after approx. 30 seconds, the reading is completed, you hear an acoustic signal and the temperature reading appears on the display.
  • If the temperature reading is interrupted, e.g. because the mouth is opened, the reading time is automatically extended. The temperature reading flashes to indicate an interruption.
  • If the reading indicates that the temperature is too high (over 37.59), an "F" for fever appears on the display.
  • If you do not want to take your temperature or want to interrupt the reading, you can stop the reading by pressing the minus and plus buttons simultaneously. You hear an acoustic signal. The device stops the reading. There is no temperature reading for this day.
  • The tip of the thermometer can be cleaned using warm water. Occasional cleaning is recommended.

  • If you are menstruating, press the plus button, "M" remains constantly illuminated.
  • If you are not menstruating, press the minus button. "M" disappears from the display.
  • An acoustic signal confirms the data. The day of the cycle alternates in the display.
^ Top

6.2. After using the device for some time

  • When Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp knows your cycle, the device only asks about "M" when menstruation is expected. It begins to ask ("M" flashes) 2 days before.
  • When "M" is finished, Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp stops asking "M" each day.
  • The first bleeding after stopping the pill is not menstruation but is caused by the withdrawal of the medication. Do not enter "M" for this bleeding.

  • You can go back to the desired date using the minus button. Then activate "M", as indicated in point 6.3.
  • It is only necessary to enter the first "M" day. The device automatically records the following two days.
^ Top

7. Fertility display

  • Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp supplies information concerning fertility on every day of the cycle by using coloured display lamps.
  • "red" = fertile
  • "yellow" = learning area, ovulation late
  • Yellow is only seldom displayed. If the device does not receive any 0 more data for a long period of time or receives information that it cannot evaluate, the number of "yellow" days increases again.
  • "green" = infertile
  • The number of green days increases cautiously and systematically.

Right from the beginning, the reliability of the displays corresponds to a Pearl-index of 0.7. This score corresponds to the test results collected from 686 women from three countries over a period of two years.

The reliability of a method of contraception is expressed for medical purposes by the Pearl-Index. The Pearl-index indicates how many unwanted pregnancies occur in 100 user years when using a specific means of contraception A contraceptive pill with a Pearl-index of 1 means that if 100 women use this pill for contraception for one year, one woman will get pregnant in this time. In general, Pearl-Index rates are as follows: pill 0.5-1, IUD 1-3, condom 5-15

8. "red" flashes (2 days)

Fertilization optimum. This means that the device expects ovulation in 1 to 2 days and sexual intercourse on this day is mostly likely to be successful". The display, flashing "red", is a prognosis. It becomes more and more accurate from cycle to cycle.

^ Top

9. Potential fertility display

  • Proceeding from the time display:
  • Press the round button once.
  • Press the plus button once to gain access to the potential fertility display.
  • Press the plus button several times to see the expected fertility of the following 6 days.
  • Every prediction is a statement of probability.

is an expectation and a prognosis. The actual level of fertility for the day for which the prognosis is made is shown on the day itself. This means that the prognosis for four days from now may be "green", but if ovulation is late and you are still fertile, the display will show "red" on day 4.

^ Top

10. Monophases

  • If there is no ovulation in a cycle, Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp indicates this to you. When this is the case the device stays on "red" or, if ovulation is late, it changes to "yellow" until "M" begins.
  • A proportion of up to 20% monophase cycles can occur. If the proportion of monophases is higher, we can provide you with a printout of your cycle to discuss with your gynecologist. LC/BC printouts can help to diagnose insufficient production of gestagen (CLI).
  • When you stop taking the pill, it takes some time before ovulation occurs again and you return to your own cycle.
  • If you would like to have more information concerning this subject, please contact us. We have a data bank which is kept right up-to-the-minute.
^ Top

11. Data from previous cycles (menstruation data)

  • If you have information about your cycle, you can enter this data into the device before the first temperature reading. Activate "M" as explained on under point 6.5.
  • It is possible to enter up to nine previous, consecutive "M" data. For each cycle, it is only necessary to enter the first "M" day, the device automatically saves three days.
^ Top

12. Back in operation after an interruption

  • The date, the year and the time continue to function automatically without connection to electricity or battery. If no temperatures are taken, the temperature reading time limit is left open and must be reset.
  • This involves setting the alarm for the next morning and continuing in the usual way.
  • If you want to enter "M" data, this is possible at any time. To enter "M" data at a later time, proceed as follows:
  • Proceeding from the time display:
  • Press the round button once.
  • Then press the minus button once. The date appears. Now press the minus button as often as is necessary or press and hold until you reach the date for which you want to enter your first "M" day (beginning of cycle).
  • Now press and hold the round button for 5 seconds. The date remains constantly illuminated and "M" flashes.

  • In addition, press and hold the minus and plus buttons, e.g. with the right thumb and the middle finger.
  • Hold all three buttons for 5 seconds.
  • If the display becomes lighter or darker while you are trying to cancel data, this means that you did not press the plus and minus buttons simultaneously.
  • If the display is turned off, this again means that you did not press the plus and minus buttons simultaneously. Please start again from the beginning.
  • An "L" appears on the display panel, with a "9" on the right. Let go of the three buttons.
  • You must count down this "9" to zero by pressing the minus button 9 times. The cancellation process is interrupted if you touch any other button.
  • Cancellation takes place automatically at zero. There is an acoustic signal. Then the current time appears on the display.
  • In this way, it is impossible to delete memorized data by mistake.
  • After deleting the data, you see the same information in the individual indicators as in the pictogram (e.g. temperature 36.65). After the first temperature reading, the pictogram data is automatically cancelled in the same way as when the device first became operational.
  • Enter "M" by pressing the plus button. "M" remains constantly illuminated. Inaccurate "M" data can be cancelled by pressing the minus button.
  • It is only necessary to enter the first "M" day. LC/BC automatically enters two more days.

24. Pregnancy planning

  • Baby-Comp shows you the optimum time for you to get pregnant.
  • You can already see the optimum days to get pregnant flashing in display window 9 on the first days of a new cycle. Just two days per cycle are considered to be optimum. These days have no significance for the sex of the offspring and so the "boy and girl" symbols flash together with the date.
  • In order to plan for a boy, only have intercourse on the day on which just the "boy" symbol is shown.
  • If your preference is for a girl, only have intercourse on the day on which just the "girl" symbol is shown.
  • Attention: the "boy" symbol lights up one day before the first optimum conception day. The "girl" symbol lights up one day after the second optimum conception day.
  • Proceeding from the time display:
  • Press the round button twice. The current date appears on the display.
  • Now press the minus button and you will see the optimum conception date in window 9, red "boy"-, "girl"- and the sperm symbol.
  • Then press the plus button twice and you will see the predicted date of birth in window 10, red "boy", "girl"- and the birth symbol.
  • Attention: Before ovulation, the displays and symbols flash. After ovulation, they are constantly illuminated. If no prediction is possible, appears on the display.
^ Top

25. Sex prognosis

During a possible or confirmed pregnancy, Baby-Comp indicates whether you can rather expect to have a boy or a girl. This is on condition that you entered SI input on the morning after intercourse. Both the boy and girl symbol will appear if intercourse took place on days on which it is equally likely for a boy or a girl to be conceived. This also applies if no SI was entered.

  • Proceeding from the time display:
  • Press the round button twice. The current date appears on the display.
  • Now press the minus button and you will see the conception date (window 9) with the symbols "boy" and/or "girl" and the sperm symbol.
  • Then press the plus button twice and you will see the estimated date of birth (window 10) with the symbols "boy" and/or "girl" and the birth symbol.
^ Top

26. "SI" input

If YOU are planning a pregnancy and are interested in having a sex prognosis, inform Baby-Comp when sexual intercourse (SI) took place.

  • Enter "Sl" data the following morning after taking a temperature reading.
  • Proceeding from the time display:
  • Press the round button twice to get into the planning level.
  • Now press and hold the round button for 5 seconds.
  • The "SI" symbol flashes.
  • Say yes for "Sl" by pressing the plus button. An acoustic signal confirms the data.
  • The "Sl" symbol remains constantly illuminated.
  • If the device has received "Sl" information, it indicates on the fertile days whether there is more likelihood of conceiving a girl or a boy in the event of fertilization (see Pregnancy planning item 24).
^ Top

27. Correcting "Sl" input

If you want to cancel incorrect "SI" input, you must do this on the same day (see point 26, but press the minus button to say no "SI" input).

^ Top

28. Pregnancy display

Baby-Comp distinguishes between three pregnancy stages.

  1. Possible pregnancy after 4-5 days red, yellow and green alternate (if Sl data has been entered)
  2. Probable pregnancy after 15 days
  3. Confirmed pregnancy after 18 days red, yellow and green flash red, yellow and green constantly illuminated

The displays for level 2 and 3 do not require "Sl" input

Baby-Comp indicates a possible pregnancy after the 4th-5th day after fertilisation. This very early indication can be made when SI (sexual intercourse) data has been entered on the following morning after the temperature reading and a possible pregnancy could be calculated. The fertility symbols red, yellow and green alternate.

After the fifteenth day Baby-Comp automatically indicates a "probable pregnancy". The fertility symbols red, yellow and green flash. If the likelihood of pregnancy is confirmed, there is a further display from the 18th day after fertilisation.

  • All three colours are constantly illuminated. The conception and birth date can be called up onto the display in window 9 and 10 via the planning level (see point 29).
  • Sex prognosis, on condition that "SI" data has been entered (also see point 25).
  • Proceeding from the time display:
  • Press the round button twice. The current date appears on the display.
  • Now press the minus button, the conception date appears (window 9) with the symbols "boy" and/or "girl" and the sperm symbol.
  • Then press the plus button twice and you will see the estimated date of birth (window 10) with the symbols "boy" and/or "girl" and the birth symbol.
  • If a pregnancy is confirmed all displays are constantly illuminated.
^ Top

29. Conception date and birth date

After ovulation has been recognised, Baby-Comp indicates the possible conception and birth dates in the planning level. These displays can be called up whether a pregnancy has taken place or not. The displays in window 9 and 10 are constantly illuminated.

  • Proceeding from the time display:
  • Press the round button twice. The current date appears on the display.
  • Now press the minus button and the date of conception appears (window 9).
  • Then press the plus button twice and the estimated date of birth appears in window 10.

Attention: before ovulation, the displays and symbols flash. After ovulation they are constantly illuminated. If no prediction is possible, the display.

30. Pregnancy confirmed

  • If pregnancy is established, we recommend that you should continue taking temperature readings every morning during the first months.
  • Baby-Comp keeps an eye on the development of the early pregnancy.
  • In the event of a confirmed pregnancy the conception date and the date of birth remain constantly illuminated.
  • Now is the time to make an appointment with your gynaecologist.
^ Top

31. Back in operation after pregnancy

  • You are not fertile during the first six weeks after the birth.
  • The risk of becoming pregnant during the first six months after giving birth is low (2%) provided that you are fully and frequently breastfeeding your baby.
  • After this and in all other cases, we recommend you to recommence temperature readings 6 weeks after the birth or even earlier. At first Baby-Comp shows "yellow". Slight fluctuations in temperature indicate that the normal cycle is reestablishing itself. Baby-Comp begins to show the usual fertility display.
